While the Jury is still out as to what the best mattresses are for people suffering from back pain, there are some basic guidelines to help make the decision a bit easier.
Your personal preference should be the final determining factor.
While most reputable mattress manufacturers make good supportive mattresses, there is no single type or feel that works for everyone. If a mattress allows you to sleep comfortably without pain or stiffness, then that is the best mattress for you.
- Get a mattress with good back support.
A good mattress should provide support for the natural curves of your body and alignment of your spine. It should also provide the correct support for your weight. This will avoid muscle soreness in the morning.
- Get the right balance between comfort and support.
Overall comfort can be just as important as sufficient back support. Its pointless getting a really good supportive mattress that does not feel comfortable, similarly the opposite is true. Finding the right balance is important.
- Know when itβs time to get a new mattress.
If your current mattress is visibly sagging or no longer comfortable, its probably time to start looking for a new one. Donβt underestimate how a new mattress can change your life and mood for the better!
- Speak to the professionals.
Speak to your chiropractor.. they generally can advise as to the type of mattress or firmness of mattress you require. Cloud Nine mattresses are endorsed by the South African Chiropractors association, so they tend to be a popular recommendation. On a personal level, I believe a Pocket Spring mattress tends to offer the best compromise between support, spine alignment, pressure point relief and comfort.
Hope that helped!
