We often get asked the question, “What is the difference between a guarantee and warranty? ”
All bed manufacturers we deal with offer both a Guarantee and Warranty on their products, and it is therefore important to know the difference and what that means to you if ever you have a problem with the bed.
This article will hopefully help in clearing up the basic differences between the two.
Guarantee explained
During the guarantee period (normally a period of 1 to 3years model dependent), any problems with your bed will be rectified at the manufacturer’s expense.
The manufacturer will either replace or repair your bed in accordance with their guarantee policy (it’s most common to replace).
The guarantee period varies between manufacturer and model (These can be found on the specific product description page)
The guarantee generally covers any defects and poor workmanship.
Warranty explained
The warranty takes effect as soon after your bed’s guarantee period has elapsed. So if a bed has a 2 year guarantee and 15 year warranty, the warranty is valid after 2 years onwards.
The manufacturer will replace or repair your bed in accordance with their warranty policy but most importantly, the cost of repair or replacement will be at your own expense!
Warranty periods tend to be much longer, anywhere from between 1 to 25 years. It is important to note however that if your mattress is built to last on average around 10yrs. So putting in a warranty claim after 10yrs tends to offer little benefit as the costs factory will charge will be similar to costs of a new mattress.
There is a complicated costing method manufacturers use to determine cost to you under warranty claim. We won’t get into that here, but the manufacturer will give you a breakdown and quote before any work is done on your faulty mattress.
SO BASICALLY, THE MAJOR DIFFERENCE IS THAT UNDER GUARANTEE, ANY REPLACEMENT OR REPAIR IS FREE, WHEREAS UNDER WARRANTY IT WILL COME AT A COST.
We at The Sleep Gallery only stock quality bed brands and as such, you will probably never need to utilize these warranties and guarantees, but it’s comforting to know you have them.
In the unlikely event that you should have a problem with your bed or mattress, please contact us with your details and invoice number and we will forward to the relevant manufacturer to arrange for an inspection of your bed.
NB: It is important to remember that all Warranties and Guarantees are with the relevant Manufacturer and not the store.
Important to note the following:
- Warranty period is not an accurate indication of lifespan of a mattress, but the better the warranty however, the better the quality.
- The manufacturer will replace or repair at their discretion. There are factors that will negate your claim i.e.: Mattress is stained or in a unhygienic condition or as result of physical damage (bending or improper use). These you will find on your warranty card or manufacturers websites.
- Warranties and Guarantees does not cover normal wear and tear.
- If your bed / mattress model has been discontinued, the manufacturer will replace or give rebate according to current equivalent model.
